Master of
Health Science (Clinical Data Management)
This new coursework program offers:
- advanced study in the design and management of clinical trials
- study on a one-year full-time or two-year part-time basis
- an option of an additional Honours year
Health care professionals are regularly faced with making difficult
decisions regarding patient care, treatment and health policy. This
course will provide participants with skills in designing systems that can:
- collect
- combine
- critically appraise and
- quantitatively evaluate
information in order to facilitate evidence based decisions regarding treatment and/or health policy.
Course objectives
Upon completion of this course graduates will be able to:
- understand the rationale of clinical trials, including levels
of evidence and the role of the data manager
- undertake all stages of the planning and implementation of a
clinical trial and protocol design to data analysis and reporting
- understand the ethics and regulatory issues relating to clinical
trials
- apply relevant privacy and confidentiality policies and legislature
to clinical research
- apply epidemiological principles and practice to the design and
analysis of clinical trials
- communicate with health professionals using appropriate clinical
terminology
- understand the principles of database design and reporting mechanisms
- describe and discuss concepts, processes and applications of
evidence based health care
Course structure and delivery
The course is offered on a one-year full-time basis over two semesters, or a two-year part-time basis covering four semesters. A total of 48 credit points is required to complete the course.
Students may complete 24 credit points and attain a Graduate Certificate of Health Science (Clinical Data Management) which is offered by distance education.
To make the course easily accessible to working participants, 75% of the course is offered by distance, with the remainder of the program delivered via a range of flexible modes including workshops and block teaching.
Honours
The option of an additional Honours year is available. This is
offered full-time over one semester or part-time over two semesters.
The
Honours program includes directed independent study via dissertation.
Admission Requirements
In order to qualify for admission to the degree, applicants shall hold:
- A bachelor degree from an Australian tertiary institution or
equivalent
OR
- Experience and/or qualifications as deemed appropriate by the
Head of School
OR
- Students who have undertaken the Graduate Certificate of Health
Science (Clinical Data Management) are eligible for full credit
for their study and can articulate to the Masters program.
