May 2005

Students of the School of Health Information Management graduated in a Ceremony in The Great Hall on Friday, 13th May, 2005.  24 students graduated with a Master of Health Information Management, 15 with a Master of Health Science (Clinical Data Management), 5 with a Master of Health Science (Health Informatics), 5 with a Graduate Certificate of Health Science (Clinical Data Management) and 28 with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) - 1 with Honours.

Staff members, Jean McIntosh and Michelle Bramley, with Vera Dimitropoulos, have had their article 'A Profile of Coding Staff in Sydney Metropolitan Public Hospitals' published in the Health Information Management Journal Vol 32 No 2 Page 67-73.

New website launched: The new look HIM web site was launched amid great relief from staff and stakeholders. The site is best viewed with Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape 7.1 No registration is required when installing these browsers. ITSD staff are happy to install updates. Feedback from staff and students appreciated.

Megan Bevis(HIM Honours 2003) has had a paper accepted for presentation at HIC 2004 in Brisbane, 25-27th July. (Patient attitudes towards the use of electronic health records in general practice. M.Bevis & J.Callen).
The paper presents results of Megan's honours thesis regarding patient's attitudes towards the use of electronic health records in general practice. The research aim was to investigate: 1. how patients felt that computer use by the GP during consultation effects doctor-patient communication and the quality of medical care, and 2. whether patients considered that such computer use benefits and facilitates the consultation process. Results suggested that computers were generally well received by patients and had a positive impact on doctor-patient communication and the quality of care given.

Graduation Ceremony - 7 May 2004: Students of the School of Health Information Management graduated in a Ceremony in The Great Hall on Friday, 7th May, 2004. 20 students graduate with a Master of Health Information Management, 16 with a Master of Health Science (Clinical Data Management), 8 with a Master of Health Science (Health Informatics), 3 with a Graduate Certificate of Health Science (Casemix), 9 with a Graduate Certificate of Health Science (Clinical Data Management) and 23 with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) - 3 with Honours.

Winners of HIMAA/iSOFT Innovation Awards – 2003


Monique Royle - awarded the iSOFT/HIMAA Award for her paper, Should There be an Age Split for Stroke DRGs: Analysing a large clinical data set of a principal teaching hospital over a five year period.
Monique completed this project to upgrade her Graduate Diploma of Health Science (Health Information Management) qualification to a Master of Health Information Management.

Nerida Creswick - awarded 'Highly Commended' for her paper, A Multiple Perspectives Approach to the use of Clinical Information Systems by Medical Clinicians in their Workplace.
Nerida completed this project for her Honours thesis.
