What is Health Information Management?

The role of the Health Information Management professional is dynamic and involves close liaison with medical, nursing and administrative staff, other health professionals, and the public. Health information management professionals hold managerial positions and are involved in the innovation and development of information systems that support patient care, health planning, health care evaluation, financial management and medical research.

Professional association membership
The Health Information Management Association of Australia officially represents the profession and promotes the continuing education of its members through regular seminars, workshops and conferences. All full­time Health Information Management students are eligible for student membership in the Association and upon satisfactory completion of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Health Information Management) or Master of Health Information Management are eligible for full membership.

Health Informatics have expanded the role of health information managers. Advances in IT (e.g. Smart Cards, Voice Recognition Technology, Electronic Health Records, Decision Support Systems) are creating very exciting opportunities for health information managers in a range of organisations including IT firms, government departments and health funds.

  • 1st year graduate $36,000 - $41,000
  • 2nd year graduate $42,000 - $50,000
  • 3rd year graduate $51,000 - $56,000
  • 4th year graduate $57,000 - $62,000
  • 5th year graduate $63,000 - $75,000
