Background and discipline specialty
Dr Bohringer is a comparative and human anatomist whose specialty is neuroanatomy. Her area of interest is monotreme neurobiology. In part of this work she collaborated with the sensory neurophysiologist, Professor Mark Rowe (UNSW).
The main achievement of these studies was to map the cerebral cortex of the brain of the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus). See

Teaching
Dr Bohringer has taught medical, science and health science students across all sub-disciplines of anatomy. Currently, she teaches neuroanatomy and embryology, including neurodevelopment to a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Her special teaching interest is in the presentation of neuroscience to speech pathology and hearing science students.
Professional affiliations
During her academic career, Dr Bohringer has been an active member of a wide variety of professional associations: in several, holding elected committee positions (*). These include Australian Mammal Society*, Australasian and New Zealand Association of Medical Education, Anatomical Society of Australia and New Zealand*, Royal Zoological Society (NSW), Australian Institute of Tertiary Education Administrators (later Association for Tertiary Education Management), Australian Birth Defects Society*, Australian Neurosciences Society, Higher Education Research and Development Society, Linnean Society (NSW).
Activities within the University and Higher Education Sector
Before joining the university Dr Bohringer had been the Head, Division of Anatomy at the Cumberland College of Health Sciences for some years. On joining The University of Sydney, Dr Bohringer has been a member of Academic Board and a member of the Board’s Policy Advisory Committee. She has served on selection and promotion committees and until recently was the Deputy Head, Discipline of Biomedical Science.
In November, 2005 she was elected to the Senate of the University as an Academic Staff Fellow. She is a member of the Senate's Finance and Infrastructure Committee and Senate-Student Representative Council (SRC) Committee.
In the 1980s Dr Bohringer completed a Master of Educational Administration, most subjects for which were undertaken in the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM). Responding to the industrial changes within the sector and using this training along with her organisational experience, Dr Bohringer became heavily involved in enterprise bargaining as a member of the successful National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) Core Bargaining Team in the first two rounds of bargaining. Formerly a member of both unions (FAUSA and FCA) from which the NTEU was formed, she has been an elected union official at all levels of the NTEU, including a term representing NSW on the first National Executive and three terms as NSW Division President. Her work with the union has also included membership of the National Research and Education Policy Committees. She was recently appointed as a member of the national NTEU Training, Education and Development Advisory Board.
