Master of Philosophy (Medicine)

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The Master of Philosohy (MPhil) is a research degree in which students undertake supervised research leading to the production of a thesis.

WHO IS THE PROGRAM AIMED AT?
The MPhil in the Faculty of Medicine is aimed at those who intend to pursue careers in medical or health research.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Entry normally requires a bachelor's degree with first or second class honours from the University of Sydney or another approved institution. Where an applicant does not have an honours degree the Faculty may accept the student on the basis of a qualifying exam or may choose to waive the exam if the applicant has obtained at least a credit in the highest course available in the subject or subjects relevant to the proposed course of advanced study and research.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE
All students must successfully complete one compulsory 6 credit point unit of study on research methods. Full-time MPhil students have a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years to submit a thesis for examination. Part-time students have a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 4 years to submit.

 

Doctor of Philosophy (Medicine)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research degree in which students undertake supervised research leading to the production of a thesis.

WHO IS THE PROGRAM AIMED AT?
The PhD in the Faculty of Medicine is aimed at those who intend to pursue careers in medical or health research.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Entry normally requires a master's degree, a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) or a bachelor's degree with first or second class (division I) honours from the University of Sydney or another approved institution.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE
Full-time PhD students have a minimum of 3 years and maximum of 4 years to submit a thesis for examination. Part-time students have a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 8 years to submit. The word limit for a thesis submitted to the Faculty of Medicine is 80,000 words. PhD students are not normally required to attend classes or undertake coursework units of study, with the thesis being the only or major examinable assessment requirement for the degree.
