Qualifications My name is Peter Knight and I teach in the three main areas in the School: general physiology, ageing and management. My interest in ageing has developed as I have watched my parents and their friends age. I have been concerned by the lack of general information about the ageing process that is available to the aged, and in my teaching I try to link science with the real life problems faced by the elderly and their carers. I also teach change management at the Singapore Institute of Management, as part of the team presenting the Master of Health Sciences (Management) programme. I believe management is a key to success for all health professionals. The divisions between management and practitioners are becoming increasingly blurred, and if health professionals are to maintain their stake in ensuring quality service delivery, they need to understand the issues that are important to management. I am involved in several research projects, with a major interest in research related to ageing. At present, the School is expanding into new areas of aging research. If you would like to be involved in some way, please contact me. My other research interest relates to drugs in sport. I act as official veterinarian for the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Board and Harness Racing NSW, the controlling bodies for horse racing codes in this state. In these roles I come across many issues relating to drug use and performance. Again, if you are interested in getting involved in research in this field, please contact me.
Titles of some of my recent publications are available. At present I am supervising four Honours students from the Faculty of Health Sciences. Their research topics include an examination of ways to limit strength loss following injury, issues relating to occupational health and safety, and developing a system for classifying injuries in horses. I am currently Chair of the College of Health Sciences Occupational Health Interest group, which is committed to enhancing teaching and research in this field throughout the University. I would be delighted to hear from you if you have any interest in the activities I have described.
