Qualification: B Hlth Sc. (Hearing and Speech)

My name is Paul Tawadros. I am a research student supervised by Dr. John Burne (Senior Lecturer in Neurophysiology) and Dr. Dennis Cordato (Neurology Staff Specialist at Liverpool Hospital).  My broad area of research is Parkinson’s disease which is a progressive neurological disorder resulting in freezing, muscular rigidity, problems with gait, tremor and general poverty of movement.  It affects the entire body.  Most signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can be controlled by a drug called levodopa.  However, not all manifestations of the disorder are well controlled by this drug.  Signs such as gait disturbance, speech and swallowing problems, balance and tremor are not always adequately controlled by levodopa, while poverty of movement, slowness and muscular rigidity do improve in most people.  I am currently comparing the effects of levodopa and another drug, propranolol, on limb movements, speech and swallowing in people living with Parkinson’s disease.

I also teach into a variety of subjects within the Discipline.  My general areas of teaching are neuroanatomy and physiology, respiratory and basic cardiovascular anatomy and physiology.
