BSc PhD (Melb)

Dr Laura Batmanian teaches and coordinates many of the course units offered by the School. Whilst her area of expertise lies in pathophysiology and biochemistry, her multidisciplinary teaching also covers gerontology, systems physiology, genetics, chemistry and biology, to undergraduate as well as postgraduate students. In addition, she is heavily involved in curriculum development and the offshore Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) program at the Singapore Institute of Management.

Laura is committed to researching, developing and implementing problem-based learning (PBL) and technology for the benefit and enhancement of student learning. She has been instrumental in converting a unit of study in the postgraduate Ultrasonography course to a completely online problem-based postgraduate program (for distance students). This was the first interactive, collaborative module of its kind in the University, being particularly unique in its use of the internet as its sole source of communication. Furthermore, this model has successfully been adapted to accommodate a blended learning approach used in two undergraduate oncology units. Currently, her groundbreaking work in the development of these PBL modules is being considered both nationally and internationally, as a template for other courses.  This innovative method uses a student-focused research-led teaching approach which has been recognized as an exemplary way of teaching by the number of awards it has attracted.
