Research

A/Prof Fazlul Huq is an internationally recognized researcher on metal-based anticancer drugs, metal-based carcinogenicity and toxicity, and drug metabolism. His group has designed a number of rule-breaker platinum-based tumour active compounds. He has carried out a significant number of molecular modeling analysis of drug metabolism.

A/Prof Fazlul Huq is a bioinorganic cum medicinal chemist and a toxicologist with substantial experience in metal-induced toxicity and carcinogenicity, drug metabolism and design of novel platinum-based anticancer drugs some with great potential for development as novel anticancer drugs. His group demonstrated that replacement of the central platinum unit in the trinuclear platinum complex BBR3464 (that is currently under development as an anticancer drug) with other suitable metal units would also result into highly tumour active compounds. In addition, he showed that the incorporation of bulky planaramine ligands bonded to the central metal unit would introduce additional types of non-covalent interactions that can modulate activity. His group also synthesized some trans-planaramineplatinum(II) complexes having high cell uptake and high level of binding with cellular DNA but with little or no activity. He has over 180 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

During the last tent years, he has supervised 10 PhD and 5 Master candidatures to successful completion.

The following list gives A/Prof Huq's recent publications on:-

Anticancer drugs and carcinogenicity
Xenobiotics metabolism
Fundamental chemistry and others
