Tom's Story

For many years the developers of the Lidcombe Program had been receiving feedback that the many research publications, books and chapters about this treatment did not convey a feel for what the treatment is really like. What was needed was some real images of how children and their parents experience the treatment and how it feels to be a clinician who does the treatment.

In response to this demand, film-maker Ian Avery assembled a production team, with Ann Packman as director. The stars of the DVD are Tom, a pre-schooler, and his family. Vanessa Harris, a clinician at the Stuttering Unit in the Bankstown Health Service, is the treating clinician. The DVD shares her experiences in deciding to begin treatment with the Lidcombe Program for Tom's stuttering. Mark Onslow, Director of the Australian Stuttering Research Centre, contributes the perspective of the researcher to the developnment of the Lidcombe Program.

The Lidcombe Program happens where the problem happens - during the everyday lives of children as they communicate with their parents and other adults, siblings, and peers. The DVD follows Tom through the rough-and-tumble life of a pre-school child, exploring how the treatment works for him and his family. The film-maker and director of Tom's Story attempt to show, for the first time, this aspect of the Lidcombe Program.

Production is now complete and this Ian Avery DVD is ready for distribution. It should be of interest to clinicians, parents, students and university researchers interested in stuttering. Tom's Story can be ordered here.

Please note, however, that the DVD is not intended as instruction or training in the Lidcombe Program. Such training can be obtained by contacting the Lidcombe Program Trainers' Consortium.
